Medical Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners (MRTBE)

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGISTS: The only time nuclear medicine technologists may perform CT is when it is part of a PET/CT or SPECT/CT fusion study. There are no other circumstances that permit the performance of CT by nuclear medicine technologists.

ATTENTION: If you are charged with any felony, or certain misdemeanors involving conduct which may affect patient safety, you must notify the MRTBE within 10 days of the date the charges are filed.  Arizona Revised Statutes 32-3208 provides more specific information about this law.

The Medical Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners (MRTBE) was established in 1977 after extensive study and review of documented statistics revealed that: (1) the major portion of the populations man-made radiation exposure in the United States is from the use of medical and dental x-ray producing equipment; and (2) of that portion, a significant amount is unnecessary because of the suboptimal use of equipment by the operator. The preamble of the MRTBE law states:

"It is declared to be the policy of this State that the health and safety of the people of the state must be protected against the harmful effects of excessive and improper exposure to ionizing radiation. Such protection can, in some major measure, be accomplished by requiring adequate training and experience of persons operating ionizing radiation equipment under the direction of licensed practitioners. It is the purpose of this act to establish standards of education, training and experience and to require the examination and certification of operators of x-ray equipment."

Arizona Revised Statutes §32-2801 et. sec., provide for a Board of Examiners consisting of ten members appointed by the Governor, and a statutory chairman who is the Director of the Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency. The responsibilities of the Board include:

O Assuring that minimum standards of education and training have been met by radiologic technologists, which include medical radiographers, radiation therapists, nuclear medicine technologists, and mammographers.
O Setting standards for, and granting approval to schools of radiologic technology, radiation therapy, and nuclear medicine technology.
O Administering certification exams for technologists, special permit applicants and refresher exams for technologists who have not practiced for three years.
O Investigating certificate holders charged with, or convicted of crimes or unprofessional conduct.
O Pursuing statutory remedies to resolve problems involving uncertified, non-exempt ionizing machine operators.
O Interacting with national and state professional and certifying organizations for technologists.
O Assuring optimum testing standards by contracting with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists to administer a limited scope radiography exam to qualified applicants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nuclear Medicine Technologists

Q: How long does it take to receive my license?
A: Please allow 3-4 weeks to process an application from the day it is received at the MRTBE office. Do not call to verify the status of an application. The most expedient method to verify a license has been issued is to check the MRTBE online database by first and last name, or certificate number if it is a renewal. If the application is incomplete, the process may take longer.

Q: What do I need to apply for an Arizona license?
A: Proof of current certification with the ARRT or NMTCB, a completed notarized application, a passport-sized photo and a money order or cashier's check or money order payable to MRTBE (call for fee).

Q: If I have a limited scope license in another state, what do I need to do, to obtain an Arizona limited scope license?
A: Submit official educational documents (include grade transcripts, course syllabi or course outlines, and any other documents that prove your education), a completed notarized application, a signed scope of practice form, a passport photo and a cashier's check or money order payable to the MRTBE (call for fee).

Q: Am I able to take mammograms with just a CMT license?
A: No. In order to perform mammography, a technologist must have a current Arizona CRT and CMT license.

Q: Do I schedule my PTR exam thru the MRTBE?
A: Yes. The MRTBE then contracts with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists to administer and score the exam. Once your name is submitted for testing, the ARRT will send a packet in the mail detailing the phone number and location where the exam will be administered. You will be responsible for calling the testing center and scheduling an exam date and time.

Q: How do I learn the results of the examination?
A: The MRTBE will inform you be letter.
